ZamZam Mohamud and Elizabeth Eames: Rep. Cloutier ‘an excellent fit for Lewiston’
We write in support of Kristen Cloutier for re-election as Lewiston’s District 94 representative in Augusta. Having each served as School Committee members, we especially appreciate her attention to our students, her sympathetic ear, and her deep understanding of our local needs. For instance, Kristen was instrumental in expanding the availability of oral hygiene services […]

Ann Varney: Brakey ‘a true American grass roots candidate’ for Senate
In researching political candidate backgrounds (corporate ties, voting records, etc.), I am impressed with the character and integrity of Eric Brakey, running for State Senate. He has a proven record with initiatives, like gun rights (sponsored and passed constitutional carry in Maine, helped to pass the “Right To Try” in Maine, and passing bills that […]

Rich Lowry: Joe Manchin’s travesty
West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin brags about the $300 billion in deficit reduction over 10 years, which is supposed to be one of the bill’s counterinflationary bragging points. In rebuttal: Rudolph Ziehm: Rich profit from system they hate supporting
I write in rebuttal to Mr. Joe Voisine (“Government takes from middle class to help poor,” Aug. 2). First I must say the only fox these hens need to worry about is one former Gov. Paul LePage, who gave back $300 million meant for Maine health care. After World War II the American people, at […]

Richard Fochtmann: Oil companies profit greatly amid high gas prices
The profits for three oil companies just this quarter — April, May and June — were Chevron, $11.6 billion; Shell, $16.7 billion; and ExxonMobil, $17.9 billion. Meanwhile, Republicans refuse to put a tax on excess profits. The CEOs and stockholders of these oil companies and their Republican politicians want to thank people for paying high […]

Alice Flanders: Poor adults need dental care
I have been waiting for dental care for poor adults for 36 years. I have a very good example of one of the reasons it is a good idea. I had some tenants who were on Aid to Families with Dependent Children. The mother had a toothache. It needed to be pulled. She was out […]

Gloria Holland: SHAREcenter could occupy vacant mall space
It seems like every mall area in both Lewiston and Auburn has more than its share of vacant storefronts. Wouldn’t it be amazing if one of the mall owners stepped up and offered SHAREcenter the space it so desperately needs to continue that incredible program? It would certainly be community-spirited if an acceptable agreement could […]
