Early voting has begun in Maine ahead of the Nov. 3 election, which features a high-profile set of races for governor, U.S. Senate and U.S. House, alongside State House and local contests.
Mainers can vote early for any reason from Monday through Oct. 29, and they can do so by casting a ballot in person at their local town office, returning their absentee ballot by mail or using a ballot drop box in their community.
Here are a few things to know about early voting.
Where and when can I vote early in Maine?
Early voting locations, hours and absentee ballot drop box locations for each municipality are available on the Maine Department of the Secretary of State’s website and its “Upcoming Elections” page.
On that page, voters can view and download the “Municipal Office Hours & Absentee Drop Box Locations” form, which lists each town’s office hours and drop box locations. Some towns offer early voting Monday through Friday, while others are only a few days per week or by appointment.
If a municipality does not have a listed address for a drop box, contact your town office. The “Find a Municipal Clerk or Registrar” page on the secretary of state’s website has a searchable database of contact information for local election officials.
The last day to vote early is Oct. 29, the Thursday before the Nov. 3 election. Mainers can also register to vote online or in person through Election Day. Visit registertovote.sos.maine.gov to register, update voter registration information or change party enrollment.
How do I vote by mail?
The deadline to request an absentee ballot is also Oct. 29. Absentee ballots must be returned to a municipal clerk by 8 p.m. Nov. 3, and unlike several states that allow ballots to be counted if they are at least postmarked by Election Day, only ballots received by the close of the polls on Election Day are counted in Maine.
To request an absentee ballot and find out more information about ballots for voters with disabilities and voters who are in the military or overseas, visit the “Absentee Voting” page on the secretary of state’s website.
Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said during a Monday morning news conference in Brunswick that laws regarding early voting and absentee ballots have not changed. That was a nod to President Donald Trump, who long criticized mail-in voting and proposed changes that were blocked by the U.S. Supreme Court but is now urging Americans to vote early.
“We have all unfortunately experienced frustration with the Postal Service and things from everyday mail to prescriptions not arriving in a timely manner,” Bellows said. “That’s why it can be so helpful to vote early.”
How do I track my absentee ballot?
Maine voters can track the status of their absentee ballot at absenteeballotrequest.sos.maine.gov.
How many Mainers have voted early so far, and what’s the breakdown by party?
The secretary of state’s office posts updated reports on absentee requests each Tuesday and Thursday. Ahead of the start of early voting, the office reported that 70,260 Mainers had requested absentee ballots, more than 45,000 ballots had been issued so far, and nearly 800 ballots had been returned and accepted.
About 57% of the absentee ballot requests were from registered Democrats, 14% from Republicans and 26% from unenrolled voters. The early gaps have narrowed in past elections as Election Day gets closer, though Democrats typically outpace Republicans in absentee voting.
